In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.

-Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)

People in authority have a strange way of making lesser mortals feel inadequate and incorrect. This is many a time unintentional but largely happens because the person in authority might not want to concede to being wrong.

This is exactly the kind of situation which scientists of an era bygone and even the present time might have to face. Remember that Galileo, Archimedes, Newton, and many other geniuses were ridiculed when they first stated their observations!

So, persevere always in what you believe and you shall scale great heights. All Good Research stems from meticulous observation and the willingness to think tangentially. We have to use what is already known as building blocks to build higher still. So, be sure of all your facts and scrupulously build your case, even if it be against a generally accepted fact.

Good luck in your endeavors.
